007 First Light release date estimate, trailers, and latest news

IO Interactive's James Bond game 'Project 007' finally has a name, so we can start looking ahead to the 007 First Light release date.

When is the 007 First Light release date? Way back in 2020, Hitman 3 developer IO Interactive announced 'Project 007', a codenamed James Bond videogame project that, since then, has had very little said about it.

Come June 2, 2025, just five short years later, and totally out of the blue, IO dropped the game's name, game may entail.

A silhouette of a young James Bond with a single ray of light shining behind him. The words 'First Light, game reveal this week' appear over the top.

007 First Light release date estimate

In a press release ahead of the full reveal, IO has stated that 007 First Light is an "immersive third-person action-adventure featuring a reimagined James Bond origin story, set to release in 2026." Therefore, we can expect to play it sometime next year.

Sure, the title of 007 First Light has only just been revealed, and we have no gameplay details yet, but we do know the game has been in the making since at least 2020, when the first announcement was made. Historically, IOI has also been known to turn new releases around every two years, with just two years between each of the first four Hitman games. Five years, then, seems like plenty of time for the team to be near completion on First Light.

Following a Nintendo Direct broadcast in April 2025, we also know that 007 First Light is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2, as is Hitman World of Assassination. The latter of which drops on the Switch 2 release date: Thursday, June 5, 2025.

We'd love to see IOI shadow drop First Light on Thursday as well, but an IO Interactive showcase, set to reveal more details about the game, isn't until Friday, June 6, 2025. With any luck, the release date will be announced then.

007 First Light trailers

The only 007 First Light trailer so far is the teaser trailer for Project 007, first revealed in November 2020. In the video, seen above, a bullet is loaded into the barrel of a gun, the camera moves through the barrel, before a gunshot sounds over the classic image of us looking down the barrel of the pistol.

Instead of revealing Bond at the end, the original codename for the game was shown on a red background, replacing the iconic white.

We now know that First Light is a James Bond origin story, which we can perhaps now see was hinted at by the full journey of the bullet, from being loaded into the gun at the top of the clip.

007 First Light gameplay

Other than being confirmed as a James Bond origin story, we don't know anything about the 007 First Light gameplay yet, with more being released later this week.

However, given that the game is being developed by Hitman's IO Interactive, we can perhaps expect some similar gameplay, including a lot of stealth as the spy learns the ropes and earns his number.

That's all we know about the 007 First Light release date so far, but we'll update you as more is announced, including the date and more gameplay details. In the meantime, check out some other best PC games of all time, including the original Hitman.
